2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the anticipated over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Shift Follows Poor Feedback
Brinkman takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing initial reveal last autumn.
Recently, the company's top executive a key figure notified staff about this strategic move through an official communication, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had indicated the requirement for a distinct vision.
The president expressed that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a revised approach, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment
This announcement mirrors a similar action taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the full content from the president's memo:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a note, I stated the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative developers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that relationship to continue.”
Through your commitment and adaptability, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS testing phase was revealing. It confirmed the potential of a action-packed game but made clear we still had improvements to make. It revealed the requirement for a more distinct brand.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the input to consideration and revamped Project ETHOS with a refreshed direction - one that’s ready to achieve its potential to our audience.
The trust in this project grows every day. To further the outstanding progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome the new hire as the latest Director of the team. Following some time of conversations, Ben comes aboard us on next week.
His guidance and background in the PVP shooter space is considerable, having dedicated the recent years producing and overseeing some of the most recognizable franchises in the industry, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in receiving Ben soon. We are all excited to keep witnessing the development of the game in the time to ahead.
David
Experience of the New Head
The appointee presently serves in the role of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, before that, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Title Information and Vision
The upcoming game was announced in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. At the time, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting step forward on the category."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the official summary reads. "Take on the rivals with new abilities, stakes, and tests that shift every match. Will you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Or take a risk, put it on the line, and hope your team can achieve the highest spot? The choice is in your hands."
The game does not have an announced launch window or platforms, but enthusiasts can look forward to additional details as development progresses.
