The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in September and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.
High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.
This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a document approving the custody, the judge said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.
His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I invite you to battle with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the magistrate's decision was the possibility of his move to embassies near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The court filing emphasizes that the United States embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is situated around 8 miles from his dwelling.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist US President Donald Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will undergo a detention review on Sunday.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for healthcare, saying he required frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Context of Sentencing
He was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, Brasília.
The law enforcement stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.
The judges found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the moment, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the next presidential race.
