Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several access tunnels leading to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, after an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
